When I first applied to the Young Leadership Program (YLP), I had no idea how transformative the next 8 months would be. As part of the 2023-2024 cohort, I joined 20 other young professionals, all under 25 and freshly graduated, who were eager to tackle some of Mongolia's most pressing issues. The weekly seminars were enlightening, but the real magic happened when we split into smaller teams to design and implement projects that could create tangible change in our society to a certain degree. My team and I decided to tackle a challenge that many might shy away from or would not even think of—rethinking the way Mongolians view and dispose of clothing. We launched a project called "Chika" aimed at raising awareness about the staggering amount of clothing waste and the importance of embracing thrifted clothes, despite the cultural and religious taboos surrounding them. At first, it felt like we were up against an insurmountable task. How do you convince a society to question deeply ingrained beliefs? Luckily, with the knowledge, skills, and confidence we gained from the program’s weekly sessions, we faced those challenges head-on. The lessons we learned and the ideas we exchanged became our toolkit for success. Beyond the project itself, what made this experience truly unforgettable were the friendships I formed. There’s something special about working alongside people your age who are just as passionate and driven. Through countless discussions, collaborations, and shared goals, I gained insights not just into their perspectives, but also into my own aspirations and capabilities. The connections I made during the program have become a cornerstone of my personal and professional growth, and I know they will continue to influence me long after the program. So, if you’re considering applying to YLP, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ll be challenged, inspired, and supported in ways you can’t even imagine. It’s not just about the leadership skills you’ll develop or the impact you’ll make—though those are invaluable. It’s about the journey you’ll embark on with a group of incredible individuals who will become friends, collaborators, and maybe even lifelong partners in making a difference. Take the leap, and get ready for an unforgettable ride!
